350 or 400?

I have this regular driver in Bali. He’s been with me for all my trips to the island for at least the last five years. We’re already in a far beyond your regular driver-guest relationship: I know his family, he knows all my family and friends that have used his service, I trusted him completely with all my gears and everything, he always put me first on his schedules, and he always try to act on my best interest.

When people wanting to use his service asked me how much do I pay him for a day, my answer is, “The usual rate is 350, but since he’s a regular, I pay him 400, plus tips and extra.” The common reply is, “Hey, that’s funny. Is it not the case when you are a regular you get to pay him less than the usual price?

I found this quite interesting. In my point of view, since I am a regular, then I should pay him more than I should to a driver who is a stranger.

I don’t think that discount and advantages always have to work on the interest of the regular customer.

It could be the other way around.

“C’mon, help an old friend/customer/regular” can work both ways. It’s only a case of who’s helping who.

      Well, I’m just saying people can take advantages of their friends (that’s what friends do) – just that it is a two way street :D
